Construction worker killed in Brentwood in paving accident

A construction worker was killed in Brentwood on Monday afternoon while working on a paving job, getting pinned by a large piece of machinery.

Brentwood Police Lt. Miguel Aguilar said the death of the 54-year-old man occurred at Dainty Avenue and Walnut Boulevard about 3:30 p.m.

Police said they're investigating what happened, but consider it at this point a "tragic accident."

"Our sincere condolences go out to the victim’s family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time," police said on social media.

Neighbor Tom Gregory said he was familiar with the company, Globe & Son Asphalt Paving, because he had also hired this company to pave his driveway.

3 workers killed at San Leandro company; Cal-OSHA has no power to shut down

Three workers in the last eight years have been killed at a family-owned metal scrap recycling business, and the San Leandro company has been fined for more than 60 safety violations as far back as the 1990s – possibly the worst safety record of any similar company in the last 10 years in California, a review of state records shows.

"They did my driveway earlier this year," Gregory said. "Then a couple of months ago, they did the driveway in front of the addition. They were supposed to go over today and finish a patch. I told the staff, guys, your boss is going to need a lot of support."

Gregory said he was heartbroken, both for the worker who was killed and for the worker who was driving the paving truck, where it is very hard to hear and see.

Gregory said he believed it was the first day of work for the employee who died.

The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the man.

Police said Cal-OSHA inspectors were assisting with the investigation.
